If you are new to Magic: The gathering and would like to just give it a try - you're very welcome to come by! We'd be happy to teach you all the basics, as well as provide a free starting deck.

Overview:

One life left. We stand at the mercy of fate itself; six cards left to play and a single mistake could be our downfall. Odds like these could cause lesser folk to break into tears, call it quits, run back home to hide under the blankets of their childhood bed; fate is after all a cruel and unforgiving master.

But fate has no servants here. I look at the cards in my hand: 33 and 78. I scan the image of these numbers into my brain and transmit my thoughts into the Sync. I catch Frank's eye and he gives me a knowing smile, we both turn to Sam who mirrors back our expressions with perfect confidence. "I think its me" I say; but we all know this already. 33, 45, 46, 47, 78, 89.

Fate will not have us today. We trust in the Sync, and the Sync has lead us to victory.

The Mind is our Game of the Week! Easy to teach and easy to learn the Mind is a cooperative game for two to four friends where players must use their intuition, ability to count and the powers of the mind itself to lead themselves to the most satisfying of victories.

Overview:

The Mind itself is made up of a deck of cards numbered one to one hundred, along with some life and shuriken cards. Starting with level one each player will be dealt a single card from the shuffled deck of numbers and the players must work together to place the cards on the table, one at a time, from lowest to highest numerical value. The most important rule however is that you are not allowed to communicate about the number on your cards in any way! Here you must trust in the power of the Sync. Connect your minds and trust in your instincts. If you believe your card is next then play it! If you can feel that your card is last then do not doubt yourself and play it too soon! Don't forget to communicate in the ways that you can; you should trust your own gut and your friends' guts too! Every time a card is placed down when another should have gone before, it all cards that should have gone before are placed beneath and a life is lost. Run out of lives and its game over. Those who trust in the Sync however will easily pass level one! The deck is reshuffled for level two and each player will be dealt two cards, then three in level three and so on. Every few levels will earn players an extra life or an extra shuriken. Shurikens can be used at any time if players agree that the next move is too hard and allow every player to discard their lowest card.

The Mind also comes with a handy reference sheet to give any number of players a goal of what level they should try to reach. But why stop there? Your only real opponent is the version of you who played the previous game! You gonna let that punk win???

Spyfall is our Game of the Week! For any fans of social deduction games like Werewolf or Avalon, this game is a must! For those who don't think social deduction is all it's cracked up to be, Spyfall is the perfect opportunity to give the genre a second chance! With streamlined, simple mechanics, faster game time and no player elimination, Spyfall offers opportunities for creative sleuthing for three to eight friends for as little as ten minutes or as long as hours and hours!

Overview: When opening a box of Spyfall one will find thirty sets of eight cards. Each set contains copies of the same card showing a location (one set will be the casino, another the supermarket, the airport, the nightclub, the beach etc.), with the exception of one card which will be the spy. A set will be chosen at random and the amount of cards needed will be drawn from the deck (making sure that the spy is one of them). The cards will be shuffled and one each handed out to the players, along with a list of all possible locations. Those who take a cheeky peek and see a card displaying the location are the investigators; their job is to hunt down and expose the spy. The one player whose peek shows them the spy has to figure out what location the other players' cards show before they are discovered. The game begins with one player picking another and asking them a question. That player will then give an answer and then then asks anyone else a question. Here's where things get interesting! The perfect questions and answers will hint that you know the location strongly enough that the others who know the location won't suspect you, but not too strongly or the spy might figure out what the location is! Once a player is confident that their sleuthing skills have led them to their win condition they have two options on how to proceed. If you are the spy you will boldly flip over your card and proudly pronounce the location. If you're an investigator you will call out your accusation which will then go to a vote; if the vote fails you will lose your powers of accusation and if it passes the spy reveals themselves. In both cases if your claim was correct your team wins! If you were wrong however,you lose! Losers need not sulk however! A new set of cards will be drawn from the box and the game begins all over! More recently from Spyfall comes Spyfall DC Comics Edition! Play as the Justice League hunting down the joker; adding in new locations, new characters and special new abilities!

What is Pathfinder all about?

At its heart, Pathfinder Second Edition is the same type of game as first edition. You take on the role of a sword & sorcery adventurer of your own design, going on daring adventures for a chance at fame and fortune. One player takes on the role of Game Master, helping to adjudicate the actions of player characters, nonplayer characters, and monsters, weaving all of them together to form a compelling story—one that everyone at the table helped to create!

Of course, as a game, Pathfinder is a lot more than just telling stories. It is a system of rules that defines how the world works, and for Second Edition we wanted to make sure that this game “engine” was easy to understand and interpret, both for players and Game Masters! And while we made sure that creating and advancing your character was a clean and intuitive as it could be, we also ensured that the game allowed your choices—your vision for your character—to truly matter. The decisions you make in Pathfinder define your character, expressed not just in the story but in the rules as well.

Core Mechanics

Pathfinder is a narrative roleplaying game, meaning that you describe what your character is attempting to do while the Game Master describes how the story and world unfolds around you. Whenever there is doubt or uncertainty in actions, you will be called upon to make a check, which requires you to roll a d20 and add a modifier based on your character’s proficiency at that particular challenge. These checks come in many forms, from swinging a sword to climbing a cliff to dodging a roaring fireball. The result of your check, as interpreted by the GM, determines whether or not you succeed at your task, and might even decide whether or not your character survives!

In Pathfinder Second Edition, proficiency determines nearly every important statistic used by your character during play. How skilled are you with a longbow? How good are you at Stealth? What is your aptitude for casting illusion magic? All of these statistics, and many more, are defined by your proficiency in the statistic.

Proficiency is gained through the choices you make in building your character. If you are untrained, you get no bonus at all, but you can still add a modifier from a relevant ability score to represent your raw talent. If you are trained, you add your level plus 2, along with any other relevant modifiers. If you are an expert, you add 4 instead. Masters add 6, and characters with legendary proficiency add 8. This basic formula applies to nearly everything in Pathfinder Second Edition, making it easy for you to see where you stand and understand what your chances are at overcoming the challenges the game puts in front of you.

Facing Danger

The world of Pathfinder is a dangerous place. Vampires lurk in forgotten tombs, trolls prowl in the mountains, and deadly dragons await atop mounds of priceless treasure. These threats—and many more—await your character as they explore the story, and more often than not, such encounters will end with a thrilling combat.

Combat in Pathfinder is much more structured than the freeform narrative play of the rest of the game. During combat, participants take turns, during which the number of things that can be accomplished is limited. On your turn, your character will get to take three actions. Many of these will be what are called basic actions, like moving, drawing a weapon, opening a door, or making an attack. Some might be special actions that only your character can take, based on the choices you made during character creation. Casting spells, performing amazing martial stunts, or utilizing special class features like rage are all examples of special actions.

Just because your turn is over does not mean that you do not have an opportunity to participate in the combat. Some characters can take special reactions that allow them to interrupt the flow of play on other characters’ turns. You might dodge an incoming attack, block with your shield, or even attempt to counter an enemy’s spell. Each character can only take one reaction between turns though, so you have to make it count!

Combat continues until one side is defeated, gives up, or retreats, but these deadly encounters are just one way that you might resolve conflict. You might use skills or magic to sneak past foes, or you could try to talk your way out of a fight, relying on guile and charm to win the day. Ultimately, the way you approach danger in Pathfinder is up to you, and your chance at success depends on the choices you make for your character!

A number of turns pass and the chips begin to pile up. One of us is taking this card; Andrew has chip equity for days, and Eric has the resources to support his stubborn streak. So it looks like this is between you and me, and I couldn’t be happier.

I clasp my hands tightly around my chips, and I shake them. I shake ‘em good. I wait watching to see if you crumble. You don’t, you play a chip but I can’t imagine you have many more left with the sour look you wear. It gets to my turn and I smile as I pay my chip, and add a cheeky “no thanks” - confidence is key. It gets to your turn, now with even more gusto I shake my four remaining chips. They rattle selling an idea of wealth beyond your imagination.

Your eyes widen, surely I can’t have that many chips left!

I’m in your head.

No Thanks is a push-your-luck game, where your luck is really your ability to extort chips out of your friends. And your friends are really just mindless goons that you flex your chip extortion ability on. This week it's our game of the week, I hope you enjoy it.

Overview:

This game is about cards, forget about the chips for a second, you just aren’t ready for them. In No Thanks you are trying to score the lowest points in order to win. There is a pile of cards in the centre between all the players, and the top card is revealed. Its got a number on it between 3 and 35, shockingly that number is also the amount of points you get if you take it. The only break to that rule is that a run of cards is only worth its lowest value, so imagine I have 26, 27 and 28, that is only worth 26 points.

Let’s talk about chips now, because even though this game is about cards, lets get real - it’s actually about chips. What is a chip? A chip is worth negative one point, which is pretty good when you want as few points as possible. That being said, a chip is worth so much more, as the cost of saying ‘No Thanks’ to a card is one chip. It’s placed on top of the card to be claimed by whoever is the person to crumble and pick up the card.

Imagine you have the cards 30 and 31 in front of you, you have a lot of chips, often the pay-out for taking higher cards, but you aren’t so happy with so many points to your name. A stroke of luck, the 32 is the next card revealed, for you the 32 isn’t worth any points as it is a part of your run. So the real game begins, your opponents will pay a lot for that card and it’s in your best interest to take as much as you can.

Decrypto is our new Game of the Week! It's kind of like Codenames, as it is a team based, clue giving word game for four to eight players, but with much more tension. In Decrypto, you and your team mates are exchanging clues for the same four words over and over, desperately trying to come up with new hints that don’t make much sense with those you used in the previous rounds. While also trying to decipher your opposition’s words. The push and pull of trying to keep your code a secret while still making it easy enough for your team to guess it, is what gives the game real intensity.

Overview: Each team has four words, each round a player on each team will have to make clues to tell their team the order to arrange three of their four words in. If your team messes up the order twice you lose! “That’s so dumb, ill just make the clues really easy so my team doesn’t get it wrong” I hear you say, cool, you can do that but... you still will lose. Every round your opponents takes a guess at your teams code and if they get it twice they will win. All of this is mirrored, as you will also have to try and guess your oppositions code too. And that’s the game.

Overview

There's been a murder on the streets of Hong Kong and one of the detectives investigating the crime is the perpetrator!

Every player has four pieces of evidence and four potential murder weapons placed in front of them for everyone to see, and one secret role card labelling them as the murderer, the forensic scientist or one of the detectives.

The game begins with eyes closed. The forensic scientist and murderer open their eyes and the murderer chooses the evidence and murder weapon in front of them that proves their guilt, pointing to them. All eyes are then closed and opened, and the game officially begins!

The forensic scientist's job is to get any of the detectives to accuse the murderer with the correct evidence and murder weapon, but just like in real life they're not allowed to speak! By drawing a set amount of scene tiles they will instead choose from options around cause of death, victim occupation, scene of the crime etc., to try and hint the correct combination. The detectives will spend the game discussing these clues and arguing their own innocence or others' guilt to their heart's content, but each get only one accusation!

The job of the murderer is to throw around as many baseless arguments, observations and general chaos as possible; the only way they can win is if all of the detectives accusations are wasted.

Then finally after the "official game" ends comes the final stage, in which a hilariously frustrated forensic scientist berates the detectives and themselves for all the stupid/brilliant interpretations of their stupid/brilliant clues!

With all your vulnerabilities obvious, Azul is intimacy. A game about tiling shouldn’t be so sexy.

Azul is my favourite two player game, whilst still being a fantastic game for three or four as well. A lot of that comes down to simple and elegant game design.

Overview:

The game happens in three stages.

First you must takes turns choosing tiles from coasters, in this game you are tiling a wall so you are going to need some tiles. This makes up the excitement of the game as you will need to balance taking tiles that you want, with taking the tiles your opponent needs. The best thing is that Azul wants you to be good at this, by the third play of this game you will be able to look at your opponents wall and be able to determine exactly what pieces they hope to get.

The second stage happens as soon as all the tiles have been moved on to the player boards. Where they are simply moved from the loading bay on to the wall.

Finally you score. Now if you happen to be someone familiar with tiling, you would know that it is good practice to place tiles down next to other tiles you have already placed, Azul knows this and so it has a scoring system that encourages it. Another good practice is to work out your score out loud, as obnoxiously as you can, just so your friends know you aren’t cheating.

With over 10 game modes and over 60 different components to play with, Junk Art challenges you to create art from junk!

The game can be played several different ways - at the beginning you choose 3 cities from 12 locations available, each with its own unique twist. The game rules and mechanics change depending which cities you chose!

Travel between the cities, work on your unique masterpiece, and score as many points as you can in the process. If anything falls - it stays down! In the end, the player with the most points wins the game!

Oh, Iceland.. a dream destination for many, the land inspires music, art and well, board games! In Reykholt, you compete in growing fresh produce in a greenhouse - just in time for the tourist season.

Other than lovely art and beautifully crafted components, Reykholt offers a lighthearted cosy theme, streamlined rules and easy-to-learn gameplay. This is a rather light-weight euro-style board game, with Worker Placement mechanism at its core.

How it works? The game lasts 7 rounds total, each consisting of 4 phases - Work Time, Harvest Time, Tourism Time and Homecoming Time. Players allocate their workers to different slots on the board and thus get to perform actions, some of which will allow them to "seed" - plant different veggies in their greenhouse. Players then get to harvest and stock their goods, and race against each other along the tourism track.

There are no victory points to score, simply advance along the track and the player to get to the finish line - wins! Despite the gentle and cheery theme, once you arrive at the final round, things can get heated as you see your lead slipping, or someone unexpectedly catches up with you!

Simple and elegant, it plays much like a roll-and-write dice game in which you mark your results on a scoring sheet...but with no dice! Instead, you have cards in 3 stacks, each representing an action you can take on this turn, and 3 different house number that you can assign to your buildings. Once the turn is over, each card is flip to reveal the next action available, as well as the next house number.

These actions provide unique opportunities and may multiply your score. A bit of strategy, a bit of thought-out planning... In the end, you calculate the results of all of your chosen actions, and the player with the highest score wins!

In this well-received cooperative card game, players are challenged to adapt their decks to the many encounters and evolve to fight their enemies better. As the game progresses, players will explore their surroundings and face off against more and more monsters, all the while getting closer to the powerful bosses hidden withing the labyrinth of Encounters.

Keep in mind - your deck is not only used to attack your foes, it also represents you health. Running low on cards means you are closer to death. You can, however, replenish your deck while resting at the bonfire.
