Rebirth by Mighty Boards: This Year’s Winner

Following a series of calamities that left civilization in shambles, societies around the world are being rebuilt anew in harmony with nature. Scotland lies in ruins, and the ancient clans have taken it upon themselves to restore the land. As clan leaders, you will compete for strategic control of the land by rebuilding its prestigious castles.

Rebirth stands out for its innovative gameplay and elegant design. Created by Reiner Knizia, a prolific game designer known for his clever mechanics, Rebirth invites players to build and develop civilizations across either the Scotland or Ireland map, each with their own unique setups. The game balances resource management with tactical decisions, making every turn meaningful.

Each turn, players draw a tile from their supply and place it strategically on the board, these tiles represent your clan’s contribution to rebuilding the land. You will be trying to play electricity farms, food farms, houses, castles and cathedrals in their own unique ways, generally with specific placement rules or area majority adjoining them, to gain points. Players continue until all tiles are placed on the board. At that point score any incomplete settlements, castle and objective cards and then most points wins!

While easy enough to learn but difficult to master, Rebirth certainly offers enough to entertain seasoned board gamers.

Revisiting Daybreak and Endeavor Deep Sea

Daybreak and Endeavor Deep Sea have both earned their place in the Kennerspiel des Jahres hall of fame for good reasons.

  • Daybreak is a co-operative game about climate action. Each player controls a world power, deploying policies and technologies to both dismantle the engine of global heating and to build resilient societies that protect people from life-threatening crises.

  • In Endeavor: Deep Sea, you head an independent research institute with the goal of developing sustainable projects and preserving the fragile balance of marine life. Throughout the game, you’ll recruit field experts and use their abilities to explore new locations, research dive sites, publish critical ecological papers, and launch conservation efforts.

Both games share a common thread: they demand thoughtful decision-making and offer rich, immersive experiences for players who enjoy deep strategy.
