Anomia: War of the Words

Happy new decade to all you Mind Gamers out there! Would you believe that a totally independent, completely unbiased study of an undisclosed amount of people found that most people's New Year's resolution for 2020 was to play more board games and card games? We sure do!

With this in mind, why not start working towards this totally legitimate New Year's resolution with a game that represents the energy of the holiday seasons: chaotic, stressful, occasionally extremely argumentative, but overall a lot of fun! Mind Games' Game of the Week is back and we're starting off with Anomia!

Overview:

Anomia is a game made up of two decks of cards; one for new players and one for the well experienced. Each deck contains cards with a coloured symbol at its centre and a category written at the top and bottom.

The setup for Anomia is really simple; all you need to do is shuffle your chosen deck, place it in the middle of your players and let the chaos begins!

On their turn, each player quickly grabs a card from the deck and flips it face-up in front of them. If the symbol on their card doesn't match the symbol on anyone else's card then it immediately becomes the next player's turn, who will do the same. This will continue, each player placing their new card on top of any they have in front of them, until two matching symbols are exposed at the same time.

If you notice that your face up card has a symbol matching someone else's you must yell out something from the category on their card before they can yell out something from yours. Whoever is faster wins the showdown, takes both cards and the game goes on!

To be a good player in Anomia you must always be observant! After every showdown, the two cards taken by the winner will reveal the cards underneath them; revealing two new cards that may or may not match the card in front of you! Each showdown has the potential to avalanche into another, or even several at once! Whoever has won the most cards when there are no more opportunities for showdowns wins the game!

If you think Anomia sounds like the game for you then please come and grab yourself a copy from Mind Games Melbourne at 244 or 145 Swanston Street! Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can get real hectic!
